Know Your Roots
A Photo Story Walkthrough
In an average case, we remove a tooth before there is any damage to the nerves running below the tooth. In image #5 (above), the nerve bundle travels through the jaw under the roots of these teeth.
Early Removal Is Best
Dentists prefer to remove impacted teeth when the roots are still short and not fully developed, as this makes the extraction much easier and safer. The arrows point right at the roots that have not finished growing yet. Notice how the roots are shorter than the roots of the other teeth.
Many Varieties
The blue arrows (above) show how some upper teeth can be positioned too high. The roots of these upper teeth may extend close to the sinuses. Removal of these teeth is made easier by having good imaging beforehand so that the sinus stays undamaged.
The red arrow (above) shows an impacted lower tooth. Although it looks like it is all the way in, notice how the jaw bone curves up right on top of this tooth image. This tells us that the tooth will never fit into the mouth and will always be impossible to brush adequately.
The black arrow (above) shows another example of an impacted tooth. Teeth like this should always be removed.
3D X-Rays Eliminate Surprises
These images show a tooth that is stuck (impacted) in the jaw. Around the top of this tooth is a hole in the bone that could be serious. 3D images from our Galileos Cone Beam Computerized Tomography system allow us (or a referred oral surgeon in some cases) to provide the best treatment without surprises.
Frequently Asked Questions About Wisdom Tooth Extraction in Batavia
How do I know if I need a wisdom tooth extraction in Batavia?
Common signs include pain or pressure at the back of your mouth, swelling around the jaw, difficulty opening your mouth fully, or recurring infections around a partially emerged tooth. However, many wisdom teeth cause no symptoms yet still need removal — Dr. Gregor uses the Galileos 3D imaging system to assess your wisdom teeth and determine whether early removal is recommended before complications arise.
Is wisdom tooth extraction painful?
Most patients are surprised by how comfortable the procedure is. Dr. Gregor uses local anesthetic to ensure you feel no pain during the extraction. You may feel some pressure during the procedure, but our team monitors your comfort throughout and will adjust as needed. Mild soreness after the anesthetic wears off is normal and typically manageable with over-the-counter pain relief.
How long does recovery take after a wisdom tooth extraction?
Most patients recover within 3 to 7 days for a straightforward extraction. Surgical or impacted extractions may take 1 to 2 weeks for full recovery. Dr. Gregor will provide detailed aftercare instructions at your appointment to help you heal quickly and avoid complications like dry socket.
Does Dr. Gregor perform surgical wisdom tooth extractions, or will I be referred to an oral surgeon?
In most cases, Dr. Gregor refers wisdom tooth extractions to a trusted oral surgeon, especially for impacted teeth or more complex cases. He does perform extractions himself in select situations — typically when the tooth has already erupted and involves factors like lower bone density or bone loss. The Galileos 3D imaging system helps him evaluate your specific case early, so you know what to expect and whether a referral is the right path for you.
Does dental insurance cover wisdom tooth extraction in Batavia?
Most dental insurance plans cover wisdom tooth extractions, particularly when medically necessary. The extent of coverage depends on your specific plan. Our team is happy to review your insurance benefits before your appointment and provide a cost estimate so there are no surprises.
